Welcome to coolforests.org, an online resource dedicated to highlighting the importance of preserving Australia's old forests in the fight against global warming. As we work to combat climate change, preserving our remaining old forests represents one of the easiest, cheapest and quickest ways to reduce carbon emissions. On this site you will find the latest research and resources detailing the value of old forests, petitions and contacts where you or your organisation can show support for the preservation of forests as well as links to like-minded groups and information about old growth ecosystems.

Old MyrtleWhy old forests?
As they grow, trees and plants suck in carbon. This carbon is stored in wood, leaves, roots and soil. While young forests draw in carbon quickly, forests that are allowed to grow old can store more carbon. The huge volumes of biomass found in older forests represent vast carbon stores.
Research shows that logging old forests and managing them on shorter rotations for timber production leads to massive carbon emissions. A forest that is regularly harvested will have on average much less carbon than an undisturbed forest. Logging old growth forests results in a major climate change impact.  Protecing these old forests now will lock in carbon and make a major contribution to reducing greenhouse emissions.

Biodiversity: the web of life
Preserving old forests also safeguards vital ecological services and habitat for rare and endangered species. As climate change effects human societies and plant and animal communities around the globe, retaining these havens of biodiviersity is a wise insurance against rapid ecological decline.

Sign the Old Forests Appeal or Take Action to have your say.

Coolforests.org is an initiative of the Huon Valley Environment Centre, a not-for-profit community conservation organisation based in Southern Tasmania.

Help us raise awareness about the value of preserving old forests in the fight against climate change. Any funds donated will be specifically dedicated to creating and disseminating information about the value of old forests in mitigating dangerous climate change. Visit huon.org to make online donations or find contact information.
